ABOUT ME

From Mom's House to Madison Square

Frank "DJ Theory" Martinez, owner Theory Music, DJ, producer, editor, educator

I started my DJ career at the age of 15.

All I had going for me was a pair of borrowed turntables and my father’s collection of vinyl records. From that very moment, I knew that DJ’ing and music production was my calling.

Two years later, while working as the In-House DJ for a Northwestern University radio station, I was given the opportunity to start my professional career in the High End Private and Corporate event industry in Chicago, IL. This is when I began to broaden my musical knowledge and fine tune my ability to read and motivate large audiences through my music.

At 21, I transitioned into the Chicago nightclub industry, and that substantially elevated my game. That experience provided me with a unique education and an expanded understanding of a vast array of musical genres as well as a clearer perspective on how to “MOVE” crowds of all ages and backgrounds. After spending almost 8 years on that path, I decided to make a major life change and move to New York City in an attempt to step up to the big stage.

Since then I have performed at several, major celebrity events on some of the largest stages in the world, played at many of New York's hottest nightclubs and as a result, I have also started my music production company "Theory Music”.  My client list includes GM Motors, Happy Gilmore Productions, Cartier, Delta, NY Knicks, LA Clippers, and the Milwaukee Bucks, just to name a few.

I have also started my DJ/production project, appropriately named "DJ Theory- The Science Behind the Art" which has produced DJ's from the ages of 9 and up. I now have students that have gone on to start their own careers in music, earning a considerable income while loving what they do by expressing their creativity.

PRIVATE EVENTS

"I'm a DJ. I get the party started."

-Avicii-

As a DJ my goal at any private event is to make sure it feels custom to what each client wants while giving them an experience that is unique. Anyone can be a DJ but it's understanding how to read a crowd and keeping them on the floor is what takes years of experience.

PRODUCTION

They say music is life... but it's just an expression

I began producing music in high school, when a friend of mine would occasionally lend me his “music production machine” so I could work on my own original projects. This machine was known as the SP-1200 which, at that time, was used by all of my favorite artists.  Today we would compare this production tool to programs like Pro Tools, Logic and Ableton.

Knowing this was all I needed to get to the next level, I was determined to teach myself how to create, produce and mix my own original music. Armed with only a few vinyl records to sample from, I worked tirelessly on that machine from the moment I borrowed it until the moment I had to give it back.  Everything I know today about music production I have taught myself.

I absolutely love what I do!

In addition to producing my own music, I am equally as committed to offering this gift to others, and to this day I have NEVER lost that passion!

I consistently continue to expand my knowledge of music creation and production with the same passion, energy and excitement as when I first started.  From simple remixes to writing and producing complete albums, I have experienced it all while continuing to grow and evolve every day.

My goal, through this process, is to offer others the opportunity to express their creativity and love for music while effectively utilizing the latest production technology and techniques to achieve that goal.

Below are a mix of some of my current remixes and originals.

DJ & MUSIC PRODUCTION EDUCATION

More than a Mix

My DJ Theory “Music Mixing and Music Production Course” provides a unique,

in-home learning experience that is individualized to the students specific educational needs and desired outcome.

Through my decades of experience, an extensive knowledge of music and production, combined with a highly personalized method of teaching, I ALWAYS strive to provide a comfortable learning environment that is designed to educate, stimulate and motivative my students while offering a creative pathway to express their talent and imagination.

While in this program, students will learn professional music mixing skills as well as basic music theory and a complete education on multiple musical genres and eras. BUT… This process goes WAY beyond simply learning how to mix music!!

A major component to this process includes a comprehensive understanding and  hands-on learning experience of music production skills, from Basic to Advanced. They will learn to produce their own music tracks on a variety of platforms including Ableton, FL Studio, Logic and Pro Tools, to name a few.

Sessions include guiding and advising the student through the production process on individual tracks they are developing, and post lesson support is always available.

The ultimate goal of the DJ Theory training is to teach a skillset that will promote creativity, build self-confidence, and gain respect from one’s peers. I truly LOVE what do and I have seen enormous results that have provided long term growth and confidence in addition to creating some great relationships in the process!

I've been working with Frank since early 7th grade. He’s been a great mentor, and is extremely knowledgeable on both music production and dj-ing! I’d recommend him to anyone looking to learn about what djing is really like!

Our son, Charlie, has been working with Frank for six years. What began as weekly DJ study grew and expanded to include not only mixing, but a focus on music production as well. Frank’s influence on Charlie has truly been life-changing. Frank’s encouragement, patience, and positivity helped Charlie to develop the confidence he needed – not only to make music on his own, but to share it with others. Frank has always encouraged Charlie to work hard, to communicate effectively, and to pursue his passion. Frank has become a true mentor and advisor, as well as a cherished member of our family. It is in large part due to Frank’s influence that Charlie has chosen to study music production in college and will be starting as a freshman in the Music Industry Recording and Production program at Drexel University this fall.
